Extension of Adoption Law Deadline
Denmark has passed a law that delays a deadline in adoption legislation. A sunset clause (a rule that automatically expires on a certain date) is being moved from July 2025 to January 2027. This gives more time to handle the consequences of Denmark stopping the placement of children in international adoption.
Who is affected?
This change primarily affects:
- People involved in Danish adoption processes
- Adoption agencies and social authorities handling Danish cases
- Children and families still waiting for their cases to be processed
The change applies only in Denmark – not in the Faroe Islands or Greenland.
What is happening?
In 2024, Denmark decided to stop sending Danish children for adoption abroad (called international adoption). An earlier law said certain rules would expire on July 1, 2025. Now this date is being moved to January 1, 2027.
This means there is more time to properly close cases and handle all the children and families already involved in the process. Without this extension, some rules would suddenly stop before all cases were resolved.
